Morph-specific differences in escape behavior in a color polymorphic lizard

چکیده
Abstract Variation in color morph behavior is an important factor the maintenance of polymorphism. Alternative anti-predator behaviors are often associated with morphological traits such as coloration, possibly because predator-mediated viability selection favors certain combinations and color. The Aegean wall lizard, Podarcis erhardii , polymorphic populations can have up to three monochromatic morphs: orange, yellow, white. We investigated whether escape differ among coexisting morphs, if repeatable across different same predator species. Specifically, we assessed flight initiation distance (FID), nearest refuge (DNR), chosen (DR) two lizards from Naxos island. also analyzed type refugia morphs selected their re-emergence following a standardized approach. found that orange white yellow these differences consistent both sampled. Orange shorter FIDs, DNRs, DRs; select types; re-emerge less after being approached compared morphs. Observed support idea evolved alternative behavioral strategies may play role population-level loss. Significance statement Color species related reproduction, but other relatively underexplored. In this study, use experimental approach natural determine diverged behaviors. By conducting our experiments similar regimes, show for first time intra-specific populations, suggesting Using approach, demonstrate brightest stays closer than uses (vegetation) more (wall crevices), take much longer emerge simulated predation event Thus, selective pressures visual predators between evolution polymorphisms types systems. Our study species, belongs highly genus (19/23 spp. polymorphic) contains thus believe results be relevant just P .

Mating system variation and morph fluctuations in a polymorphic lizard.
In polymorphic male painted dragon lizards (Ctenophorus pictus), red males win staged contests for females over yellow males, and yellow males have greater success in staged sperm competition trials than red males. This predicts different reproductive strategies in the wild with red males being more coercive or better mate guarders than yellow males. Yellow males would be expected to sire more ...
متن کاملFear no colors? Observer clothing color influences lizard escape behavior
Animals often view humans as predators, leading to alterations in their behavior. Even nuanced aspects of human activity like clothing color affect animal behavior, but we lack an understanding of when and where such effects will occur. The species confidence hypothesis posits that birds are attracted to colors found on their bodies and repelled by non-body colors. Here, we extend this hypothes...
متن کاملTelomere dynamics in a lizard with morph‐specific reproductive investment and self‐maintenance
Telomeres in human fibroblasts shorten progressively during in vitro culturing and trigger replicative senescence. Furthermore, shortened telomeres can be used as biomarkers of disease. These observations have led to the suggestion that telomere dynamics may also be associated with viability and selection for life history variation in non-human taxa. Model systems to examine this suggestion wou...
متن کاملA morph-specific daily cycle in the rate of JH biosynthesis underlies a morph-specific daily cycle in the hemolymph JH titer in a wing-polymorphic cricket.
A previous study documented a high amplitude, morph-specific daily cycle in the hemolymph JH titer in the wing-polymorphic cricket, Gryllus firmus. The JH titer rose and fell 10-20 fold in the flight-capable [LW(f), long-winged] morph during the late-photophase-early scotophase, while it was relatively constant during that time in the flightless (SW, short-winged) morph. In the present study we...
متن کاملStress‐induced changes in color expression mediated by iridophores in a polymorphic lizard
Stress is an important potential factor mediating a broad range of cellular pathways, including those involved in condition-dependent (i.e., honest) color signal expression. However, the cellular mechanisms underlying the relationship between stress and color expression are largely unknown. We artificially elevated circulating corticosterone levels in male tawny dragon lizards, Ctenophorus decr...
